E-books..

E-books (electronic books) are regular printed books (fiction, nonfiction) in a digital format. They can be read on computers, e-readers or some mobile phones. A portable e-reader can hold hundres or more books in a device the size of a paperback book (Kindle). e-Books can be purchased online (Amazon, etc.) or many books that are in the public domain are available free online (Gutenberg, Librivox.org)

Task: 1. Compare and contrast a conventional book with an e-book. Determine the advantages or disadvantages of using an e-book.
2. Find 3 short e-books for children.
3. Read a selected passage of one of the short e-books you have found.
4. Create a T-chart and respond in the two columns:
a. You are in a dark room. What would you have to do to read the book?
b. Your battery has gone dead. How can you read an e-book?
c. How will you mark where you stopped reading?
d. An older family member with poor eyesight (like Ms. Silverberg) would like to look at your book. What can you do to make the text more readable?
e. Pick one of your short ebooks, and create a blog response to the Tekkids Topic of the Week. Your response should be no less than a paragraph, and complete sentences. ;-)
NOTE: you may go to Vocaroo.com and record your response using your microphone headset. If so, do this in a quiet space. Then post the Homework task, and vocaroo embed code on your blog.

"What does October feel like?

In October fall is starting
Coldness is coming in
Tell everybody, "Take out your candy it is almost Halloween."
On the ground you see dried-up leaves
Better zip up your jacket!
Everybody is jumping into leaf piles
Race you back to school!

Nazaret

When October comes, I feel so happy.
I get so excited because it's my birthday on the 29th. I love my birthday because it's important for me since it's when I was born. I love my birthday! Also, in the month of October is Halloween. I love dressing up for Halloween! I have so much fun decorating my house scary and spooky with webs, pumpkins, pumpkin lights, spiders, and ghosts.

I truly love October! October for me is so exciting! I love October!
Booo-oooooooooo!

Nafisa
What Does October Feel Like?

October feels scary, spirits arriving. When I sleep it reminds me of Halloween. Ghosts, devils, angels, ghosts, spooky animals arrive to me. I stay awake all night wondering animals sucking my blood. "BOO-OOOOOOO!" out of nowhere a ghost comes. I start screaming like crazy but then I see it's just a game. I go back to sleep. "Trick or Tread! Trick or Treat! Some goblins come with green and blue faces. A-aaaa-gggghhhhhh," I yell. We want candy, candy, candy is what we want. I imagine that I'm a hero in my dream so I take some of my secret weapons and kill them. Then you see them lying down dead. October makes me feel like Jack 'O Lanterns and scary pumpkins taking over the Earth. I start crying and crying until the whole Earth is filled with my tears. Then all of a sudden, my tears wash all the pumpkins and Jack 'O Lanterns away. I'm the hero again!

That's how October makes me feel.

Neha
In October, the weather is both hot and cold. It is basically a warm weather. Sometimes in October it is really, really cold and sometimes it is really hot. I don't think that October is not a bad month, but it is okay (according to my mood). I don't like when it is raining really hard, but I like it when it is sunny. I like it when it is sunny because you could go outside and play. October is mostly a cold month and different from all the other months. During October you see the leaves fall off from the tree. The leaves fall off and the tree gets ready for the winter. Everybody during October, gets ready for the upcoming pleasant holidays. People start to wear their cozy sweaters and jackets to stay warm. October is different because it is the month where the season slowly changes from summer to winter. These are some ways October is special and different from the other 11 months.

How to Handle Rudeness!

Nazaret
I remember when I was a little girl, about three years old, I was with my scooter. I was going to the swings. Then, I boy about my age popped out of nowhere. While he came walking toward me, he looked at me and at my scooter. I was beginning to feel annoyed he began to laugh. Until he said out loud that my scooter looks like a boy's scooter. I ignored him even though he really annoyed me. He is now in third grade in the school.

Two years ago, when my sister was in fifth grade, my class was lined up and all of a sudden two students from my sisters class came up to me and my friends a saying things that weren't nice. Soon they called us cry baby when we weren't even crying. I handled it by ignoring them. I also told my sister that and she told me that she was going to talk to them. Soon I felt a little better. By tomorrow after-school my sister said she talked to then and I felt much better.

Gabriela
One day when a classmate did not let me have a string for my beads and she aid "No" I said "please" "please" "please! and she still said "No! she said "only people who have their beads" and I said "ok! . I told her I will bring my beads!

Citlali
One day I was sitting down on a bench when someone pushed me aside.I was at the end of the bench. I stood up and told her to please move. She ignored me.So I asked again. But she still wouldn't listen. So she got up and screamed. Then she said sorry. She said she was frustrated because nobody wanted to be her friend. She asked me if I wanted to be her friend. I said okay.

Victoria K.
The thing that someone did bad to me was, in my old school a girls, called me bad names. They talk about me in secret places. My friend Anazina told me. She felt sad in her heart. She told me that the girls were talking about me. I sat next to my friend. She was the only person that did not talk about me. The last day of school Anazina gave a nicer gift to me than the girls who talks about me. I was really upset about her. They still might talk about me but i changed schools and i miss my friend Anazina alot.

How i handled this... How i treated the girls was by ignoring them. Sometimes being their friend to get along and trying to be nice to them.

Neha
When my friend Kristina didn't wanted to be my friend, my feelings were really hurt. Still I handled everything and took care of myself. I kept one thing in mind that if she doesn't want to be my friend it's okay because almost all of my classmates consider me their friend. I don't really care if she doesn't want to play with me. When she said that she's not my friend and she wouldn't play with me, I handled everything. I didn't fight with her, and I went to play with my other friends. With my other friends I had a lot of fun, and I even forgot everything that she said to me. My friends and I, played a lot of different games and enjoyed our day.

One day in greek school a boy came up to me and grabbed me by the shirt and lifted me up. At that moment I said to myself, "I'm sick of this!" and I hit him on his knee with my foot and I was happy. My brother was glad that I handled that on my own. He told the teacher what happened and the boy got in trouble. He never bothered me again. Now we're friends and we never fight. The End

When Somebody Wasn’t Nice to M e

One day I came to my grandma’ s house to play with my
friends on the block. So my friends came out and we were
playing. I really enjoy playing with my friends.

Then my not so good friend anymore came- her name is
Stella- and she doesn’ t like all of us on the block. So, she came
and we were playing. One of my friends, Elma, said, “ Let’ s make
her jealous” , and we were going to, but I didn’ t like that idea. So
my sister and I didn’ t do it. I told my friend, Elma, that I wasn’ t
going to do something mean like that. I decided to tell my friend
Stella the truth. So then my other friend, Elma, started to give me
a attitude. So I started to tell Elma that she was wrong and we
forgot about it. We also remembered that we were friends and that
we shouldn’ t act this way.

We said, “ Hey! We are like sisters. Why are we fighting?
Let’ s go play.” So we played and …..Whenever my friend Stella
comes out, there is a problem. She is mean to us sometimes and
has an attitude. But, whenever I play with my friends, Valentina,
Elma or Georgia, we don’ t have a problem. We always figure
things out.

Angelo 4-308
My Friend

When I was playing with my friend Jack he wanted more fake money than me. I said “we have to have the same fake money.“ Then he started to throw stuff at me. I couldn’t take it Then he spilled grape juice on the floor. Jack said it was me who spilled grape juice on the floor. I didn’t say anything. I then stopped talking to him. Jack kept on teasing me. I just ignored him. I was playing with my Dsi. Jack threw a ball in my eye. I said I got hurt with the ball. I didn’t want him to get in trouble. I just didn’t play or talk to him. Then my friend Jack stopped teasing me or throwing stuff at me .Jack said sorry. We played the rest of the afternoon.
